Abstract
The Kalmyk Khanate had a centuries-old tradition of spiritual ties with Tibet. Kalmyk lamas and members of the secular nobility made pilgrimages to Tibet, where they received charters, seals, and blessings from the Dalai Lamas and Panchen Lamas, which had both religious and political significance. This study examines information about the travels of the Kalmyk bagshi Purdash- Ochir Dzhungruev (late 19th - early 20th centuries) to Tibet, extracted from Tibetan sources and compared with Russian-language materials. The purpose of this article is to introduce into scholarly circulation and analyze previously unpublished charters of the 13th Dalai Lama Thubten Gyatso and the 9th Panchen Lama Thubten Choekyi Nyima, issued to P.-O. Dzhungruev, preserved in the form of photographs in the personal collection of A. M. Pozdneev, and also to reconstruct the context of his travels based on the biography of the 13th Dalai Lama. Particular attention is given to the identification of the addressee of the charters - Lama Agban-Sanje from the Rashi Lungbo monastery of the Derbetulus - as P.-O. Dzhungruev. The following sources served as materials: (1) photographs of the charters of the 13th Dalai Lama and the 9th Panchen Lama from the archive of A. M. Pozdneev; (2) the biography of the 13th Dalai Lama “Necklace of Amazing Treasures”; (3) the translation of the diary of P.-O. Dzhungruev, completed by A. D. Rudnev in 1904, edited by A. G. Sazykin. The study provides full translations and transliteration of the Tibetan texts of both charters, and describes the formal features of the documents, including the seals used. The methodology includes comparative historical and textual analysis, drawing on a semiotic approach to the study of seals used in Tibetan documents.
Results. The article clarifies the role of charters as acts of recognition of spiritual authority and institutional ties between the Kalmyk monastery of Rashi Lungbo and Tibetan religious centers. It is established that P.-O. Dzhungruev met with the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama during two trips to Tibet (1898-1900 and 1902-1903), receiving charters, seals, and the title of nomchi-tsorji from them. The study sheds light on the role of Agvan Dorzhiev in organizing Kalmyk embassies to Tibet.
